Alfonds, Bonners, Meredith Hein.....OH MY!!
Initially, after countless team building activities and discussions that seemed to never end, we finally hit the road as the new Alfond/Bonner concoction. And a concoction it was, as my life may have flashed before my eyes in our ridiculously entertaining car ride to St.Petersburg.
I knew this trip was going to be a challenge before I started, meeting new people and opening up within hours, and helping others while fighting my own inner struggles with hunger. While some may laugh at my overly large and sometimes concerning appetite, I am a walking symbol for problems we need to address in society. According to Sodexo Foundation (in relation to hunger in America), " At the end of everyday, 17 million children go to bed hungry." In The Working Poor, Shipler highlights the sad truth that so much of poverty is a vicious cycle that is a dominoes effect of failures in society.
Rollins College has taken on the challenge of creating a week-long experience (actually less) to mesh together the 2013 freshman Alfond Scholars and the inaugural cohort of Bonner Leaders into an unstoppable machine of leadership, service, and brains. It's strange yet amazing how closely and easily we've extended the Bonner family into now Alfonner love.
Fiat Lux is going to be illustrated as this team of extremely talented individuals takes on this weeks challenges and brings light to wherever we go. I am so excited to see what happens next and I should probably go to sleep.
