We began our day on campus with discussions on the book that we read The Working Poor: Invisible in America, with the opinions and perspectives of my classmates already challenging my viewpoint in positive ways. In our small group discussion, we addressed how the book challenges the opinions held by many about both the myth and "anti-myth" of the American Dream. Rather then see it as solely individual or solely systemic fault, we recognized that a number of issues both within individuals and the system contribute to the "seamless garment" of poverty. In our larger group discussions as well, we discussed how the book sometimes offers questions but not solutions or hope of finding solutions to the many problems faced by the impoverished. Also the larger group questioned how morality comes into play with issues surrounding poverty.
In addition, we did a number of ice breakers and an eye-opening activity that aided us in understanding the beliefs and experiences that make up each person on this Immersion. Following this we went into our respective vehicles, and thus an entertaining drive began. As a native Tampanian, it was a highlight to showcase the best of the road to Tampa/St. Petersburg's offerings such as awful traffic and merging etiquette. It will be particularly interesting to see how poverty effects people so close to my home.
Now with the delicious dinner made by the group keeping us full, we should be ready to take on tomorrow's service. I am thrilled to see what this great group of people will accomplish on the Habitat for Humanity sites in the ensuing days, and look forward to a successful intercession.
